I really liked it, but the fans can get pretty annoying. I just enjoyed the books, not saying they were the best but they were a good read. I just don't agree with the fact that all these little 11 year old kids are reading it.

The truth behind this thread makes me want to cry and cut myself.

I read a "condensed" (humorous) version of Twilight. I've never lol'd so hard. The Latter Day Saints teachings hidden in the book make giggle, too.

Oh, well.

If that Edward guy sparkles, he must've had a sparklepeen.

Although, the image in my head of him giving a c-section via teeth makes me lol out loud.

Seriously. People like this crap? Sparkling vampires.

Pixies sparkle. Vampires don't. /sad

If you want to read a real vampire saga try the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley. Wamphyri are nasty vampires.

Well... As I said in another post, I do agree with you that Twilight screws over vampire lore pretty badly. On the other hand, in Stoker's story which you mention, Dracula... survives sunlight. He is powerless in sunlight, or at least no more powerful than a normal human, but he does survive it.
(It doesn't make him glitter, though... lol)

It sounds to me like you are talking about some type of sociopaths. There's nothing paranormal or supernatural about such people, but I know what you mean.

You are correct, since Bram Stoker's Dracula can "survive" in sunlight. He is also one of the more powerful Black Court vamps. They can survive for short periods in sunlight, but they not only lose their powers, they are extremely weakened. After extended exposure, they will start to get severe sunburn, and eventually, will die.

Mainly, if you are to keep standard mythos for a "standard vampire" (that being a Black Court Vampire and not a Lord or Arch Lord), they have the following weaknesses:

  • They cannot enter a home or residence without being invited (only if the threshold of said house is of decent strength)
  • They cannot cross running water of their own power (running water negates all magic)
  • They are repelled by/injured by garlic cloves
  • They are repelled by/injured on contact by any holy symbol if there is faith behind it (holy water, Cross, Pentacle, David's Star, etc)
  • A wooden stake through the heart destroys them/returns them to mortal status.
  • Decapitation kills them only if they are returned to mortal status by above stake.
  • Sunlight begins to severely injure them after a few seconds, causing massive blistering and 2nd/3rd degree burns. It can kill them after extended exposure (only Lords and Arch Lords can survive extended bouts)
  • They must drink the blood of humans to survive, but may drink the blood of animals if they have to (the blood of animals will make them more sickly and frail, but powerful nevertheless)
  • They lose their powers during daylight, and must retreat to a dark area (typically a coffin) to rest. If they don't rest for a period longer than 48 hours, they start to become ill.
  • They appear undead, and are fairly easily spotted if you are at all aware of what to look for (this one is also debatable)

Their strengths are as follows:

  • They are inhumanly strong (maybe between 10-1000x stronger than any human, the great variation coming from different mythos or depending on their age)
  • They are inhumanly fast (again, at least twice as fast, and more depending on age)
  • They have the ability to glamor or seduce their victims. This can be used like a form of brainwashing or simply a seduction. They must meet your gaze, and you must be weak minded for it to work (unless they are very old, and then even with a strong will, you might fall victim to it)
  • They can transform into a bat, mist, shadow essence, or wolf. (This one is debatable, and many attribute this more with Red Court vamps)
  • They can fly (this has been changed in some modern mythos, but it is part of the oldest myth)
  • They can survive a massive onslaught of bullets, knives, grenades, and pretty much everything else you can throw at them.
  • They heal almost instantly, being slowed by very little.
  • The older ones are very wise, having had hundreds if not thousands of years to refine themselves and their skills. (Though, the only surviving ones of that age are usually Lords or Arch Lords)

The Dresden Files does a great job at separating the types into their various courts, and really describes them well, keeping almost all the mythos behind each type intact.

Oh, and yes, real psychic vampires don't have any supernatural abilities or talents. They can, however, release a lot of aggression in a short burst, making themselves a bit faster and stronger and much more vicious. This short burst of raw emotion comes at a price though; they are usually exhausted after doing so, and seek a very weak individual to "feed" from, to the point that the victim might become suicidal in rare cases. You can probably figure out from news stories who might be a psychic vampire or the victim of one, just from the circumstances surrounding their story/death. Just don't start jumping to conclusions about every single case you hear, and blaming a supposed "psychic vampire."

If a perfectly normal woman stays in an abusive relationship for many many years, claiming to be happy, then one day, offs herself in the bathroom... it may well be that her husband/boyfriend was a psychic vampire (and he may not even know it) For the most part, many people fit the bill, but few are dangerous enough to be worried about. If you know someone who you just really don't like that much, but for some strange reason, feel compelled to be around, they might be a psychic vamp. Normally, these people are pegged as sociopaths, that much is true. Many are also labeled as having bipolar disorder, or some other similar mental defect.

Only the ones that are aware and know how to control their ability have a huge circle of friends, and are usually very popular artificially through their "powers." They lure people into their web, and are very influential, coercive, and at times, cutthroat. I think I've spotted a few on campus before, but could never be to sure without getting into their inner friends circle to see what effect they had on me. If you are in highschool, usually the most popular kid in school is one. They may not be aware of it, but usually to some degree, they are. They use their unseen ability to manipulate and puppeteer others, and they appear to have friends that you believe wouldn't think twice about hanging out with them. They might be involved in 10 different sports, have a 4.0 GPA, and just come across as the perfect stepford child... but don't be fooled, they are simply a succubus.

Hmm I have not heard of that, but I might have to look into it.

When I was of twilight-reading age, my parents made the mistake of letting me read Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. While it warped my twelve year old soul, it wasn't a bad series. Don't read any of her stuff past 1995 though...

I also read Bram Stoker's Dracula right AFTER I had read those books. It is the original and best, so I would recommend that before anything else.

There are more 12 year old girls than comic book/super hero fans, so it's not surprising that the new twilight movie would do better than batman.

and so, being the nice guy that i am, i allowed my girlfriend to sucker me into reading Twilight. and like the book freak that i am, i now cannot put it down until i finished all four books. today i find myself $50 lighter in my pockets, and my shelf gained four extra books. since these books are not particularly difficult reads, i'm already finished the first one and working on the second.

as a whole the first book was not bad; not the best that i've read, but hardly the worst. the writing is rather uninspired, and i found the whole transition between "edward creeps me out" to "i love him forever and ever and ever and ever" to be rather quick. i don't know about the next few books, but i did find the New Moon movie to be funny instead of romantic, so i guess i'll just have to wait and see.

Not too much to be honest and odd that transition didn't happen to me when I got suckered into reading the first book. It did make me wanna grab a lighter though and burn the book, thats just me though.

I think the best part of all this is how my girlfriend complains that Bella is such a whiny, dependent bitch and she doesn't deserve everybody bending over backwards for her at all times. She says that she's quite possibly the worst example of a "heroine" you could possibly make...

...and she loves the books and makes me go see all the movies

This is a little treat for all those out there who have had enough of the whole Twilight thing:

http://www.buzzfeed.com/rchemel/twil...e-screening-4c

I mean really...I don't understand how these people cannot recognize that the books are /terribly/ written and the movies aren't really all that much better. *sigh*

I hope this brightens your day a little...I know it did mine.

Sooo, vampires, eh? Heheh, nasty critters they are.. Since Rahja is apparently "into the vampire business" and all, and since "psychic ones" seem to be most dangerous, here`s a book that i`ve read several years ago from Dan Simmons. It`s called "Carrion Comfort". Rahja, it`s a must for you.

finished book two and three. book two is unmistakably better than book one, to the point where i think the movie didn't do it proper justice. Bella's catatonic zombie state was illustrated far more effectively in the book than the movie (or maybe the actress just sucks at acting, who knows?), and her emotional depth seems to be much better fleshed out. instead of coming off like a ditz, Bella actually seems to be a real person. i also like the author's way of describing: events happen, with a lot of the details implied, until they were explained later in the story. the author spent exactly one paragraph describing Bella's emotional state right after the big breakup, yet it was utterly effective in conveying it. overall i really liked book two. it also happens to be the one with the least vampires; what are the chances of that?

book three however seemed to be a disaster. it just feels REALLY dragged out, with very little of significance happening. with the vampires back, Bella became the ditz again. maybe Rahja was right about the "psychic" vampires, since the Cullens seem to be of that kind.

one more book to go. i should be done by tomorrow, and then i'll be able to function normally again. like i said, once i picked up a book, i cannot stop until i finish it (or them, in this case)

moriz, funny I succumbed yesterday to that too. I wasn't expecting much of anything. And yet I read all 4 books in 24 hours. Wasn't even that well written. I can't even explain why they held my interest. Something about them...
